Each year, November is recognized as National Adoption Awareness Month by many across the country and right here in Texas. Consequently, November is not only a time for celebration but also a time for reflection for all of us in the adoption triad. Across Texas, there are more than 6,500 children waiting for adoption in the foster care system, including 188 in Travis County. This year, Travis County will celebrate Austin Adoption Day on November 5, 2015 at the Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center where dozens of children will celebrate their new forever families at a daylong ceremony and celebration. Gardner Betts will be transformed, complete with a Yellow Brick Road, to fit the theme of “There’s No Place Like Home.” This annual celebration is the kickoff event that will be followed by “Adoption Days” throughout the State of Texas in which hundreds of children in foster care will finalize their forever families.
AKA hosts its annual conference during National Adoption Month and encourages its members to not only attend and volunteers at the Conference but to also do something special to create awareness during this special month. As an adoption attorney and adoptive parent, I have committed to create more awareness by sponsoring two local adoption days as well as the AKA conference and to also blog about adoption on my law firm’s social media. I hope you will find a way to get your family involved in this special month whether it’s at their school, your workplace or even just sharing articles about adoption on your Facebook page.
